ERROR: The user name or password is incorrect

Hi Octopus Support,

Our App Services team assists with Octopus Production deployments by generating and inputting passwords in the Variable sensitive passwords sections of projects. They’ve noticed issues with certain passwords that have special characters. Below is error:

ERROR: The user name or password is incorrect.

For example, a recent password with alpha-numeric characters and a “+” (plus) sign in the middle failed.

I apologize if I missed the documentation, but is there a list of special characters allowed in sensitive variable passwords?

I saw a similar issue with special characters in passwords, but I don’t think it was clear.


This can be closed. It turns out our App Services team did not check the account in CyberArk last week. It was locked out, causing the issue.
